Klay Thompson to the Miami Heat: What the Splash Brother Brings to South Beach
Klay Thompson to the Miami Heat: What the Splash Brother Brings to South Beach
Yais World Sports Media | NBA News & Analysis
Klay Thompson is headed to Miami.
After agreeing to a buyout with the Dallas Mavericks, the five-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion is expected to join the Miami Heat after clearing waivers.
For Miami, this isn't simply about adding another veteran.
It's about adding elite shooting around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
The Heat completely changed the outlook of their roster this offseason after acquiring Giannis, and Thompson gives Miami another experienced shooter who can punish defenses for leaving him open.
π Klay Thompson's Last Active-Season Numbers
During the 2025-26 season with Dallas, Thompson averaged:
11.7 points per game
2.1 rebounds per game
1.4 assists per game
39.3% from the field
38.3% from three-point range
69 games played
Those numbers obviously aren't the same Klay Thompson we saw during his championship years with Golden State.
But one number still stands out:
38.3% from three.
Klay doesn't have to average 20-plus points for Miami.
He needs to knock down open shots.
And playing next to Giannis could give him plenty of them.
π What Could Miami's Starting Lineup Look Like?
A projected Heat starting five could look like:
PG — Davion Mitchell
SG — Klay Thompson
SF — Andrew Wiggins
PF — Giannis Antetokounmpo
C — Bam Adebayo
That lineup immediately gives Miami an interesting combination of size, defense, playmaking and shooting.
But the biggest attraction is the spacing.
Imagine a defense trying to deal with Giannis attacking the basket while Klay is standing behind the three-point line.
If defenders collapse on Giannis:
Klay is open.
If defenders stay attached to Klay:
Giannis gets more room to attack.
And then Miami still has Bam and Wiggins.
That's what makes this fit so interesting.
π₯ Why Klay Could Fit Miami
Klay's Dallas tenure didn't go exactly as planned.
His scoring numbers declined, and he wasn't the same offensive force he was during Golden State's championship years.
But Miami isn't asking him to be that player.
That's important.
Giannis will create pressure at the rim.
Bam can score, rebound and facilitate.
Wiggins can attack and defend.
Davion Mitchell can handle the ball.
Klay can focus on what he has always done best:
Move without the ball.
Create spacing.
Shoot.
Defend.
Make winning plays.
That could be exactly what Miami needs.
π΄ Miami's New Identity
The Heat are entering the season with a completely different look.
Miami now has the ability to surround Giannis with players who can shoot and defend.
A potential core of:
Davion Mitchell
Klay Thompson
Andrew Wiggins
Giannis Antetokounmpo
Bam Adebayo
could create serious matchup problems.
Miami could play big with Giannis and Bam.
They could surround Giannis with shooters.
They could use Klay as a movement shooter.
And they have championship experience coming from one of the greatest shooters in NBA history.
π How Does This Change the Eastern Conference?
This is where the Klay addition becomes especially interesting.
The East already has several teams capable of competing for the championship.
But Miami now has a completely different type of offensive identity.
Giannis gives Miami an unstoppable downhill threat.
Bam gives them another big who can defend and facilitate.
Wiggins provides two-way ability.
And Klay gives them one of the most recognizable shooting threats of his generation.
Miami doesn't need Klay to be the player he was in 2016.
They need him to be a dangerous shooter who can make defenses pay.
If he can stay around the 38–40% range from three, his impact could be much bigger than his scoring average suggests.
π Can Miami Compete for the East?
That's the big question.
Klay's declining production means Miami shouldn't expect the 2016 version of Thompson.
But they don't need that version.
They need Klay's shooting gravity, championship experience and ability to play without the ball.
And that's something he can still provide.
Imagine defending a Miami lineup with:
Giannis + Bam + Wiggins + Klay
over a seven-game playoff series.
That's a difficult matchup.
π Yais World Sports Media Take
Klay Thompson going to Miami makes sense for both sides.
Klay gets another opportunity to compete for a championship.
Miami gets one of the greatest shooters in NBA history.
And most importantly, Klay doesn't have to carry the offense.
His job can be simple:
Run. Space. Shoot. Defend. Win.
The Heat went from having questions about their direction to becoming one of the most intriguing teams in the Eastern Conference.
Now we get to see whether Giannis, Bam, Wiggins and Klay can turn that potential into a championship contender.
South Beach just got a lot more interesting.
